Reverent Or Irreverent

Reverent or Irreverent by Earma Brown

It's popular these days to say about TV shows and more, 'It's totally irreverent!" People usually mean it's hot and you should enjoy it. But before you start saying that as a hot thing to say. Here's a couple of people in the Bible who were considered irreverent.

Cain was warned about the sin crouching at his door. Yet, he disregarded it when he brought God the common sacrifice and offering instead of the first and the best like his brother Abel. As you know, he got so jealous of Abel's favor and blessing because of his obedient offering, he killed his brother and became the first murderer. By faith, Abel still speaks today. His obedience tells us to be reverent of our God and his way.

Esau was irreverent and disrectful of the things of God. The Bible described Esau as, despising the things of God. In Genesis 25:34, "Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew. Esau ate the meal, then got up and left. He showed contempt for his rights as the firstborn."

And then again the Hebrew writer warns us about taking on the attitude and actions of Esau, "See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done." -Hebrews 12:16,17

As Christians, we have to guard against the ways of the world. The word of God says, we should work hard to stay unpolluted from the world. The writer of James says, "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." -James 1:27

So, to be reverent, respectful (fear) of God is how we should want to be. To do that, let's look at what reverence means generally, 'deep respect for someone or something. regard or treat with deep respect.'When Jesus taught the disciples to pray, he started with Our Father, Who are in heaven, holy is your name..." He essentially taught them and now us, to reverence our heavenly Father daily.

I encourage you to make reverance a part of your worship time. Even in Jesus' prayer pattern, he starts by reverencing the name of God. With all of that said, here are some good reasons to reverence our God in our irreverent world and society.

When we reverence (fear, respect) God, we can expect to:

6. Cultivate Gratefulness
Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. -1 Samuel 12:24

7. Built up in the church
So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase. -Acts 9:31

8. Brings security and protection
Fear of the LORD leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm. -Proverbs 19:23

9. Enjoy a longer life
The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. -Proverbs 10:27

10. Know your destiny
Who are those who fear the LORD? He will show them the path they should choose. -Psalm 25:12

So, won't you join me in learning to reverence, respect and fear our God more and more. I pray your faith is encouraged to live a respectful, reverent life before Him, guarding against being polluted by the world as night approaches.

Seeking to stay reverent,
Earma Brown
