Raising Up Spiritual Sons
- Categorized in: Blogs
Once again, there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his fighting men to fight against the Philistines and became exhausted. Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David.
However, Abishai son of Zeruiah, came to David’s rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him saying, “Never will you go out with us again; so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.” —II Samuel 21:15-22
In the segment of this chapter, I’m talking about the spirit of might that is upon the men and women of God. You might have noticed, in this instance David is doing what he’s supposed to do, go out to the battle and defeat the enemies of the kingdom of God. You might remember what happened when he didn’t go out to fight the battles. Instead he went out looking across other folks roof tops and got himself in some trouble.
This time he is in the right place and the right time but there is one problem; he is a bit older and in this battle, he became weary. The enemy, David is fighting, says to himself, I know David, for the giant was of that same descendant of giants of Rapha that had fought and lost to him in an earlier season of battle. He said to himself, “David is weary. I will kill him this time.”
You see this time the giant was saying, “I’ve eaten my Wheaties! This morning, I believe I’m up for the task. I’m Ishi-Benob! Proclaiming to himself in self-motivation, I’m a descendant of Rapha; I have a reputation to live up to; I have a bronze spear which weighs three hundred shekels and I’m armed with a new sword. He said, “I will kill David this time.”
But what the enemy didn’t know or realize, even though the generational curse thing was up against the man of God. God had a factor in place and it was called the “Sonship Factor.” He was for sure about to find out about it.
So David in his weariness may have thought to himself, man the giant’s relative may take me out this time. Can you see it? It’s like in one of those Mel Gibson movies. For example, in Brave Heart where he is fighting in one of those against-all-odds situations.
But this was a blind spot that the enemy didn’t think about nor did he take into account. He totally overlooked the spirit of might and King David’s sonship program. You see in the Kingdom of God, the seeds that you sow are the harvest that you reap.
David had sown so many seeds of bravery. The warrior spirit and a spirit of might on his spiritual sons had them prepared. David displayed this spirit of might from day one when he came on the scene. Even back to when he was first anointed by Prophet Samuel, the word of God tells us the spirit of might from the Lord was upon him from that day forward.
Furthermore, they heard of the victorious battle with the lion and the bear and him as a shepherd boy. Then there’s the battle with him as a teen-ager and Goliath, whose head he cut off. And don’t forget the proclamation ‘Saul has killed his thousands and David his tens of thousands.’ All this was done before their very eyes as their example.
His team of mighty men had been trained well; evidently, they had taken good notes. It proved to be true by their exploits of the same caliber. I’m pretty sure they all received their mantle in a baptism by fire. Therefore, Abishai rose up, slew the giant and killed him.
Food for Thought
1. Are you a son in your house of God? Is there a sonship program operating in your church and are you active in it?
