Passing The Baton

Passing The Baton by Varn and Earma Brown

Have you seen a race where they pass the baton, one to another, recently? It truly amazes me to see how our little child hood games can speak to us in life, if we allow it to. In this race of passing the baton, the main objective is the team with the baton to cross the finish line with the help of each other. The one who crosses the finish line first with the baton wins. Another thing to realize, is the greatest opportunity for mishap is during the pass. It takes skill, focus and determination to successfully pass to the receiver.

Now what does that symbolize spiritually to you and me. The word of God tells us to run the race with all diligence, being prepared in all diligence. What’s symbolic of it, is a race that’s not run by ourselves, it includes others, so not only our generation but the ones to come.

Are You In Preparation To Pass The Baton?

We serve a God that’s generational in thinking. Remember, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. You know that it’s good to be a success but it is really noted to train a good successor when you are leaving provision for the next generation, and the ones after that. We must make sure that we are in the right mold of thinking. We should not just have a “Me, Myself and I” kind of thinking.

Here’s what King Hezekiah did about the matter:

Hezekiah became king when he was twenty-five years old; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah. He did right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father David had done.

In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the LORD and repaired them. He brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them into the square on the east.

Reform Begun

Then he said to them, “Listen to me, O Levites. Consecrate yourselves now, and consecrate the house of the LORD, the God of your fathers, and carry the uncleanness out from the holy place. “For our fathers have been unfaithful and have done evil in the sight of the LORD our God, and have forsaken Him and turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and have turned their backs. “They have also shut the doors of the porch and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel.

“Therefore the wrath of the LORD was against Judah and Jerusalem, and He has made them an object of terror, of horror, and of hissing, as you see with your own eyes. “For behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this. “Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that His burning anger may turn away from us.

“My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has chosen you to stand before Him, to minister to Him, and to be His ministers and burn incense.” II Chronicles 29:1-11

The Challenge In Passing The Paton

As a leader you must be willing to delegate your authority and give what the Lord has given to you, to your successor. A good leader will always be reproducing themselves within their team. Because, as a faithful servant, the Lord may be preparing to promote you to a higher position/another level. And how can he do it, if you have no one prepared to take your place?

We serve a God of order and completion. If we are following his way, we are continually going from level to level and glory to glory. He wants us to follow his pattern of producing good leadership for the kingdom of God. Done this way, the pattern can go that step further of generation to generation.

Won’t you join us in preparing a baton to pass to our successors and even the next generation.
