New Levels In God

Has God called you to go to the next level in service? Are you feeling a bit restless and dissatisfied with being an assistant to the leader? A few years ago, a young woman wrote to us saying, "I think I may be out growing armorbearing. What do you think?" We advised her to seek the Lord. And if she discovered Father God was indeed calling her, then it was time to stand steady and train a successor. Rarely, if ever is it time to run off pursuing something else if there's no one to take your place.

Of course I realize this does not apply to everyone. For some, it may be a life time assignment of helping their leaders. For them, I can say it’s a great honor to do what God has asked you to do.

On the other hand, there's a good portion of armorbearers that God has called to go beyond their initial call of armorbearing. If you fit this category, consider this; your dissatisfaction may be God calling you toward your next level of service.

You may be what I call 'divinely dissatisfied' with where you are.  In my own life, I've discovered God used his 'divine dissatisfaction' to cause me to search for Him as a solution. The writer of Acts instructs us, "God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us." Acts 2:21

Going To The Next Level

After discovering, it is God calling you to your next level get ready for the process. A good friend of ours tells a story that explains well the process of going to the next level.

He was visiting an uncle on his farm. He got up early the first morning excited to look around and see what he could see. He went out to the barn and noticed a baby chicken struggling to break out of its shell. He curiously watched it peck, struggle and strain to become free of its shell. It seemed so hard on the baby chick that he decided to help it along.

He reached over and pulled away the rest of the pieces of shell; making it completely free. He thought it was going to hop up and start walking around like the other little chicks that had broken themselves free. Instead, it lay there dying not having enough strength to raise itself up.

Puzzled, he told his uncle what he had done and asked why the chick died after he freed it. The relative explained that the birth process of the chick was a part of what strengthened the chick to be able to hop around and get food after the process. If anything interfered with that process; the chick would likely die.

Do you see it? I see us in that little chick. Pecking, struggling and straining through God's process to the next level. You know sometimes the next level is nothing more than a new or refreshed character that He wants us to operate in. Is God calling you to operate in a greater level of love or patience?

Or perhaps God has called you to the next level of armorbearing, helps, leadership. Won't you join me in discovering new ways to cooperate with God as he readies us for the next level:

Seek the Lord: If God has truly called you to the next level, he will communicate it to you. Go to him; pray and find out. You're his sheep and his sheep hear his voice. I know we're all at different levels of hearing God. But I firmly believe he'll meet you right where you are.

Will You Transition to the Next Level?

Do you know what season you are in? Are you ready for the next level? Or are you leaving skid marks as Father God calls you to move on? In my life transition has usually meant change and change has meant an opportunity to use my faith. Webster calls it “the passing from one condition or place to another.” Sometimes I forget life is so seasonal unless it’s a difficult season and I’m ready for it to end. Then I remind myself often this too shall pass.  After all the Word of God says, “They shall go from strength to strength…” Psa. 84:7

Rev. Rod Parsley acknowledges Dr. Lester Sumrall as his mentor, many times repeating the advice to him as a young minister to others, “Know your seasons as the chosen of God. There are seasons of receiving, serving and ministering.” I’ve learned if we recognize our seasons with God, we are better able to cooperate with His plan and purpose for our lives.

I enjoyed my serving season as an armorbearer. I remember saying if God has called me to do this the rest of my life I would be pleased. Even while saying this, I could hear a quiet voice remind me that I have never quite been able to get comfortable for too long. Change always would come that required my faith. Maybe you are like that too. Mature Christians know that one day God will call them to the next level which brings me to my earlier question. Are ready for your next level in God?

There are probably hundreds of Armorbearers at this place of transition. Consider this what if King David had not been willing to become King? Or Joshua had not been willing to go to the next level as leader of God’s people into the Promised Land?

What if Pastor Timothy had enjoyed being mentored by the Apostle Paul so much that he couldn’t see himself going to the next level of what God had called him to do? Before my serving season ended, I had never heard or read anything about the season of transition in the Ministry of Helps.

1 Samuel 16-13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren; and the spirit of the lord came upon David from that day forward. David was anointed, for one day he would be King and soon after that he became Saul’s Armorbearer

My point is in the five-fold ministry there is the ministry of helps; you may be operating as an armorbearer in the ministry of helps but in your anointed gift of helps may be residing the ministry of a prophet. Who but God controls the timing when it shall come forth?

I would always say jokingly to my Pastor “Lord forbid I should ever have to leave you.” In the Old Testament David went from armorbearer to King and Joshua went from assistant to receiving Moses mantle. Armorbearer comes from the Hebrew word Nasa and assistant comes out of the same root word so Joshua operated as an Armorbearer.

How can we know when the Holy Spirit wants to take us to the next level?  We can know by the same Holy Spirit that delivered God’s call to us.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of god.

Act 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted the Holy Ghost said, “Separate me

Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. So we see the Holy Spirit is in charge. He shows us how He wants us to move and it’s not by our personal feelings...

The ministry of helps is at the latter part of the list of the ministry list in 1 Cor. 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

I believe that leaves a large area for growth and promotion.  I know that I’m not the only one that God has called to go through a transitional season in life. So, if you are there or recently there I encourage you in your obedience and willingness. It’s not always an easy choice to go to the next place in God but He is always faithful. Remember, the faithful seeds that you have sown in your leader’s life will come back to you many-fold if you decide to “go to the next level.”

In His Service,

Embrace the process: There's a group of scripture the Holy Spirit often whispers to me during my next level process. The writer of Hebrews says, "…My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord…Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields…fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen the hands which hang down and the feeble knees…" Hebrews 12:5-14

Get instructions: I am saddened when I see young ministers accept the call of God then straight away, put out their sign or pass out their ministry card to accept ministry gigs without proper training. I've learned zeal without wisdom can really bring damage to yourself and others. Instead, accept the call, then study to show yourself approved, get instruction, II Tim. 2:15 seek mentorship from the men & women of God. Allow Father God to send you. Seek to be among the 'sent' not the 'went.'

Write the vision: One of the most powerful ways of cementing in your heart what God has said to you is to write it down. The writer of Habakkuk eloquently said, "Write the vision and make it plain…" Habakkuk 2:2,3 If not already, ask the Holy Spirit to confirm it with Scripture. He will; he knows our weapons of warfare are not carnal but mighty in God to accomplish every task.

Acknowledge God's timing: A pastor friend of ours says, "Impatience can be another form of rebellion." I agree. You should acknowledge and yield to God's timing. Learn to exercise patience. Even if Father God has called you to another level, it will take time for him to ready or prepare you. Submit to his process. After suffering much trying to operate out of God's timing, I've finally prayed, "Father, your timing is perfect. My times are in your hands. Help me be prepared for my next level."

Train your successor: Begin to look for and pray for your successor. Invest your best in the person you are training. Don't hold back from them out of fear. Since you've fulfilled your current position in excellence, you want to leave a legacy with your leader or pastor. You want to leave them well cared for while you enjoy and embrace your next level.

God is raising up next level helpers and leaders in His Church and all over the world. Have you noticed the spirit of servanthood sweeping the Church today? Stay in step with God; let his blessings of service flow through your life. While you are growing a great team of leaders and helpers, remember to cultivate the spirit of servanthood. So, when God leads YOU to your next level, you can expect his power and anointing because you've taken the time to become the 'SENT' not the 'went.'

This piece is awesome, timely and valuable. Thank you for writing from the heart.Bless you much.
