Believe Not A Strange Gospel
- Categorized in: Blogs
Some say, Jim Jones and David Karesh started out godly men on fire for God. As you may know they didn't continue that way. In fact, they both ended their life with a gunshot suicide, surrounded by their followers in mass suicide.
No one but God can fully say what happened to careen them off the path. But I do know the word of God says, "If we refuse correction, we go astray." So, we must remain open to correction in our lives. Correction from whom, you might be asking. Well, most of all, we should receive correction from Father God the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. We've been teaching about His discipline and even His judgement of his kids, so we won't be judged with the world.
We seek to judge ourselves lest we be judged. Yet, it needs to be repeated Father God sends correction--our training for righteousness because he loves us. For what child is not corrected by his parents. The Hebrew writer encouraged us, “Endure your hardship as discipline. God corrects you as a father corrects his children.” All children are disciplined by their fathers. Correction, if needed is all around us. For sure, our training is ongoing.
God gave us the family structure, our authorities, our community, our government. God has set it up that we can receive our training for righteousness from a lot of different places including our conscience, our parents, the word of God, his ministry gifts: pastors, teachers, circumstances and more.
When we receive correction, we ask for forgiveness and change our ways. It's the same whether you are repenting for pride, lying, offense, unforgiveness or adultery. Of course, the consequences are not the same. But the way of repentance is the same. When we repent and ask for forgiveness, Father God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Embracing the new life in Christ
First of all, let me establish that as a believer in Christ and a child of God our life should be guided by our conscience (our mind/heart), the Holy Spirit and the word of God more and more, as we grow. That's why we embrace the new life in Christ and renew our minds with the word of God and are transformed over time.
The Ephesians writer put it like this, "You were taught to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God--truly righteous and holy," and the Romans writer, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."
Some seasons are stronger than others but you should never stop renewing your mind to the word of God. Read the word of God; memorize the word of God, meditate on it, study it and teach it to your children. All trying to be led by your heart, all trying to be led by the Holy Spirit without the word of God or all trying to follow the letter of the law in the Bible can lead to ship wreck. Which in my opinion, may be what happened with Mr. Jones and Mr. Karesh. Doing it either way alone, is about as effective as all praying with no action. Not only, ineffective but it is dangerous.
Scriptures are God-breathed
Instead, everything God has given us to live for him should all work together and confirm each other. Under the New Covenant, just as God said it would be, his Word is written on our hearts; the Scriptures are God-breathed and created to help guide us, Jesus, our propitiation is the Word, the Holy Spirit was sent to help us. So to speak, the ball is in our court. We chose Christ but now it's time to say yes to God's way.
I teach when you feel you've received a word from God, you can and should test it. Is it pure and peaceable in your heart? Does it align with the Word of God? Have you received confirmations? Are circumstances supporting it? Read more about Testing What You Hear in 'Living The Prayer Fulfilled Life' book. Click here.
I am grateful the word of God is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Remember, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” –2 Timothy 3:16,17
Believe not a strange gospel
If anyone preaches another Gospel other than Christ is Lord, don't believe it. It's not surprising that some people are being deceived by this voice from the enemy. The word of God plainly says, 'And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions." –2 Corinthians 11:14
Don't let anyone tell you the word of God is just man's product and not useful for today's world. Don't believe them if they say, what your heart tells you, trumps what some ancient book (the Bible) tells you. This is a strange gospel. Anyone speaking this way, even posting to Facebook is deceived or an unbeliever masquerading as one who believes.
Steer clear of them, even run away from them. Pastor Timothy warned us like this, "But you, O man or woman of God, flee from these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made the good confession before many witnesses. –1 Timothy 6:11
Won't you join me in affirming that we believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. God's word will not pass away. Jesus didn't destroy the word of God; he fulfilled it. It is true and relevant today as it was yesterday and throughout eternity. Amen.
