5 Virtues Of A Good Understanding

5 Virtues of a Good Understanding by Earma Brown

I am considered a late bloomer with most things in my life. So, true to form when I turned forty, I began to seek God about understanding my purpose. I'm pretty sure most of my late blooming had to do with the detours I took earlier in life. Yet, Father God has been faithful to me.

So, I began to ask myself and then Father God, "Why am I here?" What is my purpose? In the process, I learned one of the biggest fears of people in general is to die having lived a meaningless life.

I must admit it didn't come to me immediately. I kept pursuing God in prayer. He began to speak to me about his general purpose for his creation 'woman.' You know the things he's given all of us inherently as men and women. One common gift shared by all women stood above the others, is her gift of influence.

It's the reason, my song became doing extraordinary with ordinary tools. I know you're wondering what all this has to do with the virtues of understanding. Stay with me, I'm going somewhere. You want to be around when we get there.

Eventually, like the dawning of a new day, understanding of my God given purpose came to me. Even more, I see the value of understanding. I encourage you to get understanding that leads to wisdom in all you do.

So, it's true, we receive better, we change better and we stay changed if we understand. It's why one strongest thing the proverbial writer said was in all your getting, get an understanding. The infamous story of Daniel, his tribulation and his 21 day fast was because he was seeking God for understanding about what was going on in his life and his nation's future.

He said to me, "O Daniel, you are very precious to God, understand the words that I am about to tell you and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you." And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. 12Then he said to me, "Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words.…Daniel 10:11,12

The definition of understanding: the ability to understand something; comprehension; sympathetically aware of other people's feelings; tolerant and forgiving. An informal agreement; an agreement of opinion or feeling; a friendly or harmonious relationship. A willingness to understand people's behavior and forgive them

Through research, success strategist all over the world say when we understand the Big Why to anything, including our life, we can succeed faster. It's why best-selling books, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren and recently Finding Your Destiny by TD Jakes sell like hot cakes. And it's why one of my most popular WOW! Women books is Women of Destiny.

There's power in getting a good understanding. It's God's way, knowledge and understanding leads to receiving wisdom. It's more important how we apply knowledge in understanding, than it is to get a bunch of knowledge. As you may know already, knowledge by itself puffs up.

With that said, to help us realize the value of understanding, here are five of the twenty-one virtues of understanding:

1. Brings light
The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple. -Psalm 119:130

2. Reveals hidden treasure
Making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. -Proverbs 2:2-5

3. Leads to wisdom
In Col 1:9, Paul prays for the Church at Colosse, that they "might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding."

4. Builds your house (life)
Proverbs 24:3,4, where we find that a house is builded by wisdom, established by understanding, and decorated by knowledge.

5. Promotes application of God's word
Faith without works (application of God's word) is dead--fruitless.

In the Old Testament, we find the three words we've been discussing to build a life, in Proverbs 24:3,4, a house is builded by wisdom, established by understanding, and decorated by knowledge.

The book of Proverbs is considered the book of application and the book James is the book of wisdom in the New Testament, and both are recommending us to apply God’s Word to our lives. In the words of James we are urged, even commanded to 'become doers of the word of God."

So, getting knowledge and understanding alone should not be the main goal of our life. But, applying God’s Word to our life is most important. James even says that faith without works (application) is a dead (unproductive) faith! (James 2:17)

I must add one word of caution, before I close, the virtues of understanding, in the kingdom of God many things are a mystery and we accept them by faith. It may or may not be connected with getting an understanding. Which is why even with receiving knowledge and understanding, we depend on the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us into how to apply all things concerning life in Christ.

I charge you to continue growing in God through knowledge, understanding and wisdom, learning to his word to your life more and more. Now, go to your destiny in God.

In Christ,

I have a few questions that I have been wrestling with for awhile now and need advice on. When one is called to be an armour bearer is it permanent or for a season? Is one to serve even knowing that your leader doesn't like you but only tolerates you for what you can do for them?
